The popes of the Roman Church continue their influence as the appearance of the second beast shows. This church appears innocent (like a lamb) but in reality “enslaves” people throughout the world and denies the Gospel of Christ.

Revelation 13:11–18 (Listen)

The Second Beast

11 Then I saw another beast rising out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb and it spoke like a dragon. 12 It exercises all the authority of the first beast in its presence,1 and makes the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose mortal wound was healed. 13 It performs great signs, even making fire come down from heaven to earth in front of people, 14 and by the signs that it is allowed to work in the presence of2 the beast it deceives those who dwell on earth, telling them to make an image for the beast that was wounded by the sword and yet lived. 15 And it was allowed to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast might even speak and might cause those who would not worship the image of the beast to be slain. 16 Also it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave,3 to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, 17 so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name. 18 This calls for wisdom: let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is 666.4

     11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. 12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. 13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, 14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. 15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. 16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: 17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. 18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.(KJV)

Hymn: WS 796 :
The Day You Gave Us, Lord, Is Ended

Hymnary.org

1. The day You gave us, Lord, is ended;
The darkness falls at Your request
To You our morning hymns ascended;
Your praise shall sanctify our rest.

2. We thank You that Your Church, unsleeping
While earth rolls onward into light,
Through all the world her watch is keeping
And never rests day or night.

3. As over continent and island
Each dawn leads to another day,
The voice of prayer is never silent,

Nor do the praises die away.

4. So be it, Lord; Your throne shall never,
Like earth’s proud kingdoms, pass away.

Your kingdom stands and grows forever
Until there dawns Your glorious day.

Hymn: LSB 886 :
The Day Thou Gavest

Hymnary.org

1. The day Thou gavest, Lord, is ended,
The darkness falls at Thy behest;
To Thee our morning hymns ascended,
Thy praise shall sanctify our rest.

2. We thank Thee that Thy church, unsleeping
While earth rolls onward into light,
Through all the world her watch is keeping,
And never rests by day or night.

3. As o’er each continent and island
The dawn leads on another day,
The voice of prayer is never silent,
Nor dies the strain of praise away.

4. The sun, that bids us rest, is waking
Thy saints beneath the western skies,
And hour by hour, as day is breaking,
Fresh hymns of thankful praise arise.

5. So be it, Lord! Thy throne shall never,
Like earth’s proud empires, pass away:
Thy kingdom stands and grows forever,
Till all Thy creatures own Thy sway.
