Today’s Bible Reading

In the aftermath of his sin with Bathsheba, David pleads to the Lord for a clean heart and a right spirit. This is the fourth of the seven “penitential psalms.”

David had enemies. We enemies because we hold to Christ and His Word. In foreign countries many Christians are put to death. In our country Christians are ridiculed for their faith. The hatred of the world will only become more vicious the closer we get to the end, but with David we say: “When I am afraid, I will trust in You.”

Three times the writer asks: “Why are you cast down, O my soul?” Each time the writer responds: “Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him for the help of His countenance.” Ask yourself, “Why am I so down?” Then, right away, speak God’s promises to yourself. This will help you in times of excessive sorrow.

He would do His Father’s will by keeping the law for us, by preaching the goodness and faithfulness of God, and finally by suffering and dying for us.
