Today’s Bible Reading

A Judean travels to Moab where his two sons take Moabite wives, Orpah and Ruth. The man and his two sons die. Orpah returns to her people, but Ruth relocates to Bethlehem with her mother-in-law, Naomi.

The punishment that the children of Israel must bear is horrendous in the extreme. The enemies of Israel, who delight in the destruction of Israel, will bear punishment of their own.

The Lord warns the people of the curse that will come with monarchy, but the people refuse to listen; they want to have a king in order to be like the surrounding nations. The Lord directs Samuel to give them their king.
