The Lord would send a messenger (John the Baptist) to prepare the way for the “messenger of the covenant” (Jesus Christ). What would the Christ do? He would purify His people from their sins.

The people of Judah disregarded God’s Law and then complained when He did not bless them! Their morality was backwards, taking what the Lord called evil and calling it good.
