The Lord sends Samuel to Jesse of Bethlehem to anoint one of his sons as the new king of Israel. Contrary to the expectation of Samuel, the Lord selects David, the youngest son of Jesse, to be king. When an evil spirit afflicts Saul, Saul appoints David to play the lyre, thereby driving the spirit away from him.
